A teacher in Ekiti State, Joshua Adebayo, has accused the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital of unlawfully removing his kidney following a surgery, an allegation that has prompted government intervention and disciplinary action against medical personnel.
Joshua Adebayo reportedly had an accident in August 2025 and was taken to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital for treatment. According to him, doctors informed him that his right kidney had been damaged and needed to be removed through surgery. The operation was carried out in October 2025.
He said that before the surgery, he was able to pass urine normally. However, after the operation, he could no longer pass urine and began experiencing serious complications. Joshua claimed that he repeatedly complained to the hospital management but was allegedly given no clear explanation and was allegedly moved from one unit to another without a solution.
Concerned about his worsening condition, he said he went to another hospital for further medical tests. According to him, the results showed that he had no kidney, a discovery that left him devastated. Following this, Joshua publicly cried out to the government, accusing the teaching hospital of harvesting his kidney.
The allegation drew widespread attention and led to official intervention. The Chief Medical Director of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital was contacted and, according to reports, explained that during the surgery, doctors discovered that Joshua’s two kidneys were “glued together,” which complicated the procedure. The CMD reportedly assured Joshua that the hospital would provide him with free dialysis while arrangements were being made for a kidney transplant donor.
In response to the controversy, the Ekiti State Government reportedly set up an investigative panel to look into the matter. After its findings, the panel reportedly recommended that the surgeon involved in the operation be dismissed with immediate effect. It was also decided that all members of the surgical team present in the operating theatre during the surgery should be suspended for one month.
The government further announced that it would bear the full cost of a new kidney transplant for Joshua Adebayo.
The case has continued to generate public concern and debate, with many Nigerians calling for stronger oversight in public hospitals and justice for patients who suffer medical complications under unclear circumstances.
