In a distressing account, the woman, who is eight months pregnant, said she often breaks down in tears, fearing she is bringing her child into a “prison-like” situation.
According to her, her husband relocated to the United Kingdom just three months after their wedding. To support his travel, she said they sold her personal belongings, including her car and business equipment, with the promise that she would later join him to live a better life.
“He told me I would be the ‘Queen of the House’ once he settles,” she said.
However, instead of relocating, she was moved into her husband’s elder sister’s “face-me-I-face-you” apartment in Lagos, a decision she claims was made by her husband to monitor her and ensure her loyalty.
The woman alleged that although her husband sends ₦150,000 monthly for her upkeep and prenatal care, she does not have direct access to the money. Instead, her sister-in-law reportedly controls all the funds and decides how they are spent.
“She buys the cheapest food and even tells me not to eat too much so my baby won’t be too big,” she said.
She recounted a recent incident where she asked for ₦500 to buy oranges due to pregnancy cravings but was denied and told to “drink water” instead.
The situation, she said, worsened after her sister-in-law allegedly misrepresented her to her husband. According to the woman, when her sister-in-law traveled for a church program, her husband sent her ₦20,000 directly for food. She claimed she used the money responsibly, even cooking meals for her sister-in-law’s children.
But upon her return, she alleged that her sister-in-law accused her of starving the children and misusing the money on luxury items.
“She told my husband I bought Brazilian hair and expensive lace,” the woman said.
She further alleged that her husband did not seek her side of the story before reacting.
“He shouted at me for over 30 minutes and called me a ‘prodigal wife,’” she said, adding that he instructed her to begin making formal requests to his sister for any personal needs.
The woman also claimed that her sister-in-law invades her privacy by checking her phone without permission. She said a recent ₦5,000 support sent by her widowed mother was discovered this way and allegedly misinterpreted.
“She told my husband my family is teaching me how to keep secrets and that I’m planning to run away,” she said.
According to her, the situation escalated further when her husband blocked her number, demanding that she “confess” to alleged wrongdoing before he would speak to her again.
Now, with her due date approaching, she says she feels helpless and emotionally drained.
“I am hungry and can’t even afford sachet water without her approval,” she lamented.
She added that when she suggested leaving for her mother’s house, her husband allegedly threatened to cut ties with both her and the unborn child.
The woman says she is now deeply worried about her mental health and survival as she approaches childbirth.
Her story has sparked concern online, with many calling attention to issues of domestic control, emotional abuse, and the vulnerability of pregnant women in dependent living situations. Others have urged her to seek immediate support from trusted family members, healthcare providers, or local women’s support organizations as she prepares for delivery.
