A Nigerian man has shared a heartbreaking account of how his family’s once-wealthy status collapsed after their father’s death, leaving him and his elder brother struggling to survive years later.
In an emotional narration, the man revealed that his elder brother recently returned to Nigeria after spending 12 years in London, but came back with almost nothing.
“He didn’t come back with boxes or even an abroad accent,” he said. “He came back with a small nylon bag and the same shoes he wore 12 years ago.”
According to him, the two brothers, now in their late 30s, are currently living together in a small room, sharing basic items and struggling to make ends meet.
“We sat on my thin mattress last night, sharing one sachet of noodles. The silence was louder than our old fan,” he said.
The man explained that their lives were not always this way. While their father was alive, the family enjoyed wealth and comfort, as he owned multiple filling stations and was well established.
However, everything changed after their father passed away.
He alleged that relatives and associates, whom he described as “vultures,” suddenly appeared to claim that his late father owed them money. With no will in place, he said the family’s assets were gradually taken over.
“They even took cars from the compound while we were still mourning,” he added.
In a bid to rebuild their lives, the elder brother reportedly traveled to London, hoping to create better opportunities for both of them. Meanwhile, the younger brother remained in Nigeria, taking on labor-intensive jobs despite being a graduate.
For over a decade, he said he consistently sent money to support his brother abroad, believing it would eventually lead to success.
“I stayed hungry so he could succeed,” he said.
However, the dream did not materialize.
The returning brother reportedly broke down in tears, explaining that despite years of hard work, he could not achieve financial stability.
“The more I worked, the more the money disappeared. It felt like pouring water into a basket,” he was quoted as saying, adding that unexpected bills and issues often wiped out his earnings.
Now, both men say they are starting life again from scratch, with no stable income, no families of their own, and no property to their name.
The situation has left the younger brother emotionally drained and searching for answers.
“Is this just bad luck, or is there something following us from our father’s house?” he questioned.
Their story has sparked reactions online, with many highlighting the dangers of poor estate planning, family disputes over inheritance, and the harsh realities of migration struggles.
Others have also pointed to the emotional toll of prolonged hardship, urging individuals in similar situations to seek support and explore new opportunities despite setbacks.
For the two brothers, however, the journey ahead remains uncertain as they try to rebuild their lives after years of loss and disappointment.
