A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of several prospective National Youth Service Corps members from Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo State, as they travelled to begin their service year in Gombe State. The bus conveying the graduates was involved in a fatal crash on a northern highway on Tuesday after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. What was meant to be the start of a hopeful journey quickly turned into a national tragedy.
Early reports indicate that out of the 18 passengers on board, about 16 are feared dead, while the remaining two survivors are currently in critical condition and receiving emergency medical attention. Rescue workers and residents in the area helped move the victims before security agencies arrived.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps have begun an investigation into the cause of the accident. The NYSC management and the Presidency are yet to issue official statements on the incident.
The heartbreaking loss has thrown families, schoolmates, and the entire AFUED community into deep mourning as many struggle to process the sudden death of young graduates who were on their way to serve the nation. Sympathy messages have also begun pouring in from across the country as Nigerians express shock over yet another fatal crash involving corps members.
