Must Read
A 38-year-old businesswoman has narrated the heartbreaking and disturbing story of how her husband—whom she supported financially for nearly two years—allegedly plotted to poison her to death in order to take over her properties, leaving her with only months to live and a six-month-old baby to worry about.
The woman, who is now battling terminal liver damage, opened up about her ordeal in an emotional recount that has shocked many Nigerians.
According to her, she met her husband when he was financially stable, owned a car and ran a thriving electronics business. They married within six months because he insisted they needed to start a family quickly as he was approaching 50. At the time, she was 36 and eager to build a family of her own.
Unknown to her, the marriage would become one of the biggest mistakes of her life.
I Suppported Him Until I Had Nothing Left
Before marriage, she already owned three major wholesale shops, three houses, two cars, and employed several workers. Despite her success, she followed her husband into a rented apartment after the wedding, determined to support him as the head of the home.
But within months, his business collapsed.
She poured more than ₦3 million into reviving his electronics shop. When that failed, she covered all their bills, paid rent, funded his parents, sponsored two of his siblings in university, and even provided monthly allowance for his extended family.
As things worsened, he convinced her they should move into one of her houses “to save money,” which she agreed to.
He later pleaded to join her business so he could “learn from her.” She took him to her shops daily, handed over suppliers, contacts, and trade secrets, and eventually opened a brand-new shop for him—fully funded from her pocket.
That was when the betrayal began.
“He Copied My Business and Stole My Customers”
According to her, once his shop opened, he started undercutting prices to lure her customers away—selling a ₦100,000 item for ₦99,000 or even ₦97,000.
Her business crumbled.
She eventually had to sell one of her shops to survive while pregnant.
The Manipulation Over Her Properties
After she gave birth to their son, her husband began a new push: convincing her to transfer all her properties to him “for their child’s inheritance and family stability.”
He gave three strong reasons:
-
If anything happened to her, the boy’s inheritance would be protected under his father’s name.
-
He needed assets under his name to qualify for major business loans.
-
As a man, he needed to be “seen” as the true owner of the family home.
Trying to protect her son’s future and support her husband, she agreed.
She signed everything over.
“Five Days of Nosebleeds… Then I Collapsed”
Six months after childbirth, as she returned to work, she began experiencing severe stomach pain and unexplained nosebleeds. She collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.
Doctors told her the devastating truth:
Her liver was severely damaged.
It was incurable.
She had less than seven months to live.
The cause, according to the medical report, was chronic poisoning.
“I Needed Proof. My Spirit Told Me It Was My Husband.”
Fearing the worst, she said nothing to her family or husband. Instead, she installed hidden cameras in their house.
Her fears were confirmed.
The footage captured their nanny—employed only months earlier—slowly adding substances to her evening meals every day.
When confronted, the nanny broke down and confessed that her husband had hired her specifically to poison his wife.
He reportedly told the nanny that once his wife died, everything would legally belong to him and their child, making him “the rightful owner” of her properties.
Husband and Nanny Arrested
Police have since detained both the husband and the nanny.
The husband is said to be crying and begging for forgiveness, claiming he “made a terrible mistake.”
“I Don’t Care About the Betrayal. I’m Just Scared for My Son.”
Her greatest pain, she says, is not her husband’s betrayal but her uncertainty about her baby boy’s future.
“I won’t be around to raise my son,” she cried. “Who will protect him? His father—who owns everything now—is in jail. I don’t know if I should regret giving him everything. I don’t know what to feel.”
She says she is broken, confused, and emotionally exhausted.
An Investigation Continues
Police authorities are continuing investigations into the attempted murder, conspiracy, and property acquisition motives.
Women’s rights groups have also called for justice and stronger legal protections for financially successful women who face manipulation, coercive control, and domestic greed.
The heartbreaking case has sparked nationwide conversation about trust, exploitation in marriage, and the dangers faced by women who empower their spouses financially.
