The girl had gone to a hospital for a common appendicitis operation, but instead of getting relief, her intestines were badly damaged during the procedure. According to reports shared on social media, the doctor claimed he was “looking for the appendix” when the damage occurred.
Since then, her health has taken a tragic turn. For months, her stomach has been leaking, leaving her unable to eat properly. She has been moved from one hospital to another in search of a solution, but no remedy has worked so far.
It was gathered that she has undergone three different surgeries in an attempt to correct the damage, but each effort failed. Doctors eventually removed her intestine and replaced it with a medical bag to help her survive temporarily.
At the moment, she requires very strong antibiotics to dry her leaking stomach before specialists can even consider attempting another surgery to restore her intestines. These antibiotics, which must be taken every twelve hours, are very costly, and her family is struggling to raise the money.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the activities of unqualified medical practitioners in the country. Many Nigerians on social media are asking how a routine appendicitis surgery could result in such severe complications, leaving a once healthy girl in a desperate battle for survival.
Health experts have repeatedly warned against allowing unlicensed or unqualified persons to handle medical procedures. Appendicitis removal is one of the most common surgeries worldwide, but when carried out by an inexperienced or untrained person, it can lead to life-threatening damage.
The case has also triggered strong reactions online. Social media users expressed anger that while one young girl is suffering after a botched surgery, others are still willing to undergo risky medical procedures for money.
A Facebook user, Precious Chinecher, who shared the video of the victim’s situation, condemned the growing trend of people taking surgery lightly. She wrote:
“Now all these complications are from an appendicitis operation, as common as it looks, performed by a quack doctor. That girl did not plan for any of this. She was not wrong for meeting a supposed doctor in a hospital to remove an appendicitis disturbing her. Yet her life has been turned upside down.”
“And there is one girl somewhere planning to surrender her pelvic for a doctor to cut open and remove her egg because of 250,000 naira. Do you know what it means to undergo surgery? Do you not fear that they could cut something or spoil something inside? God help you,” she added.
Medical rights advocates are now calling for stronger regulation and monitoring of hospitals in Nigeria, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, where fake doctors and unlicensed clinics are known to operate.
For the young girl at the centre of this tragedy, her only hope now is proper medical support and financial assistance to afford the antibiotics and further treatment.
