According to reports, Chinonso was accused of stealing a power bank in Owaelu Uratta, a community in Owerri. He was then attacked by a group of people who claimed to be vigilantes. Witnesses say he was beaten and tortured until he lost his life. The news has left many residents shocked, with strong questions being asked about jungle justice and the safety of young people in the state.
Chinonso’s death has left his parents, siblings, and friends heartbroken. The family described him as a lively young man with dreams for the future, whose life was suddenly cut short in a most painful way. They are struggling to understand how an accusation of stealing a power bank could end in the death of their son.
His burial took place on Friday 19th September 2025, at his father’s compound in Uziobi, Owaelu Uratta, Owerri North. The body left Chetakwa Mortuary at noon before being taken home for interment. Family members and sympathisers wept bitterly as his body was laid to rest.
Community members have condemned the act and are calling for justice. Many say no one deserves to die in such a cruel manner, especially when the law courts exist to handle accusations of theft or crime. They believe those involved in the torture must be identified and punished to prevent such incidents from happening again.
Jungle justice has been a disturbing problem in many parts of Nigeria. Often, people who are accused of crimes are attacked by mobs without trial, sometimes losing their lives even when there is no evidence. Human rights activists have repeatedly warned that this practice is unlawful and dangerous, as it destroys lives and spreads fear in communities.
The police in Enugu have been urged to investigate the matter fully and ensure that those who participated in the killing of Chinonso are brought to justice. For the family, justice is the only thing that can ease their pain, even though nothing will ever bring their son back.
As the community mourns, many are praying for his soul to rest in peace and for God to give his family the strength to bear this heavy loss. It is a sad reminder of how fragile life can be, and how quickly violence can destroy a family’s joy.
May this tragedy serve as a strong warning that no one should take the law into their own hands. Every Nigerian, young or old, deserves the right to life and fair hearing.
