A woman has gone public with a dramatic account of how she discovered her husband was sending money and running a small shop for another woman. She says she overheard him crying and begging his girlfriend at 2 a.m., recorded part of the call, and later confronted him. The couple, married for eight years, are now in a bitter dispute over money, care of the children and trust. The woman, who asked that her name not be used, told reporters she woke at about two in the morning and heard voices in the bathroom. She said she stood at the door and listened as a man she recognised begged, “Please, I am sorry. Do not leave me.” She says the voice was her husband’s.
She recorded the rest of the conversation on her phone. In the recording, which she played for a few friends, the man can be heard telling the other woman that he had just sent her four hundred thousand naira. He also promises to restock her shop and asks her to learn new styles so they can meet again. The woman says the call made her feel cheated and used, because she has been supporting the household for months.
“For the past four months I have handled the home finances,” she told reporters. “When he complained he had no money I paid the bills. I work hard for my children. Hearing him talk like that at night made me feel small.”
She said the husband had opened a shop for the other woman and had given her four hundred thousand naira the night before. She added that he planned to meet the woman the following week.
The next morning she spoke to her husband about money for food and school fees. She says he shouted at her, called her “mad” and refused to give money. The argument grew heated and he threatened her. She says he told her: “If you do not shut up I will beat the hell out of you.” She replied that she was no child and told him she would no longer be his only breadwinner.
The wife says she told him she would take legal action if he failed to pay the children’s school fees and refused to provide for them. She also says she took back the family car that he used to drive to work and told him to fix his own transport.
“He wanted to calm me with sweet words,” she said. “But I am done being scared. I am done being the one to feed the family alone while he spends money elsewhere.”
Neighbours who were asked about the dispute said they had seen the couple arguing in recent weeks but had not expected such a public breach of trust. “They kept to themselves most of the time,” one neighbour said. “It is sad to see them like this.”
The woman said she had prepared for practical steps. She told friends and family what had happened and said she had warned her brothers about the situation. She arranged for temporary care for the children and plans to pursue school fees and other expenses by borrowing if necessary.
Attempts to reach the husband for comment were not successful at the time of filing this report. He has not publicly replied to the recording or the allegation that he opened a shop for another woman.
Labour and family law experts say that in similar disputes the courts will look at evidence of financial neglect and the needs of the children. They also note that private recordings can be used in family court in some cases, but that the rules vary and legal advice is advisable for anyone considering action.
The woman said she regained a sense of control after she left the house that day. She drove away in the car she had bought with her own money and felt she had regained some freedom.
Neighbours, friends and social contacts have since discussed the story online and in local groups. Some expressed sympathy for the woman and the children. Others urged a calm legal approach and asked both sides to avoid threats or violence.
The case remains a private family dispute, but the woman’s public account has highlighted the strain that hidden relationships and money problems can place on a long-term marriage. No charges have been filed and the police have not been reported to be involved. The woman says she will take legal steps if her husband does not meet his obligations to the children.
