The woman, identified as Dearest Oge, took to her Facebook page to narrate how her children surprised her with their career decisions. Her post has since gone viral, with many people reacting to the unusual but hilarious story.
According to her, during a Career Day conversation at home, she asked her son what he would like to be. To her surprise, the little boy boldly said that he wanted to be a NEPA, the former name of Nigeria’s electricity company.
She quickly corrected him, saying that the correct word was “electrical engineer.” However, her son insisted that it was NEPA he wanted to be.
The mother jokingly warned him not to choose NEPA, but the boy’s father, Okwute, frowned at her. He told her that parents should only encourage their children and not force them to choose any career path.
The drama did not end there. The woman went on to share another incident that happened while she was out with her other child, Fumnanya.
She explained that they were inside a tricycle, popularly known as Keke, when a mechanic entered. The mechanic’s clothes were stained with oil, grease, and sand. Out of curiosity, her son asked why the man’s clothes were dirty. She explained that it was because he was a mechanic.
Later in the evening, when they returned home, young Fumnanya shocked her by announcing that he wanted to become a mechanic. When she asked why, he simply replied that he wanted his clothes to always be dirty like the mechanic they had seen inside the tricycle.
The mother was left speechless. She said she did not argue further, but in the middle of the night, while her children were sleeping, she quietly carried anointing oil and began to anoint Fumnanya.
She prayed over him, declaring that he would not end up as a mechanic with dirty clothes inside a tricycle.
Her husband, Okwute, caught her praying and speaking in tongues over the boy. He did not say anything at the time, but by morning, he refused to speak to her, apparently upset that she was trying to dictate the career choice of their child.
The story, which was narrated in a mix of humour and honesty, has drawn thousands of reactions on Facebook. Many parents who read the post could not stop laughing, as they related to similar experiences with their own children.
Some people commented that children often pick career ideas from funny or random things they see around them. Others praised the father, Okwute, for encouraging his children to freely choose their own paths, while many laughed hard at the mother’s use of anointing oil and midnight prayers over the boy.
The post has since continued to spread across social media, with people tagging it as one of the funniest parenting stories of the year.
For now, it remains to be seen whether young Fumnanya will still hold on to his dream of becoming a mechanic with dirty clothes, or if his parents will eventually guide him into another profession.
But one thing is sure – the story has left Nigerians entertained and has reminded many that children often have the most unexpected and hilarious career dreams.
