The woman, identified as Sellwane Radebe, was attending the funeral of her 16-year-old daughter, Machaka, who had been brutally murdered. During the service, Sellwane, who had been visibly weak and overwhelmed with grief, suddenly collapsed. Paramedics tried to save her, but she was declared dead at the scene.
Mourners were left speechless as the day meant to honour the life of a teenager ended with the unexpected loss of her mother.
According to neighbours and friends, Sellwane’s health had declined since her daughter’s killing. She had withdrawn from social life and was described as “completely broken.” The two were known to share a very close bond, often seen together in church, shops, and community gatherings.
Community members have since rallied around the family, offering prayers, food, and support. Local leaders and counsellors say the tragedy shows how unbearable grief can affect both the mind and body.
Machaka’s murder is still under investigation. people are demanding justice for the young girl, who was remembered as bright, kind, and full of dreams for the future.
The Radebe family is now preparing a joint memorial for mother and daughter, describing their bond as “unbreakable in life and in death.” The painful loss has drawn attention across South Africa, with many calling for stronger support systems for grieving parents and families facing violent tragedy.
