A 15-year-old girl, identified as Endurance Sabon, has been brutally attacked and maimed by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Goska community, Kaninkon Ward, Kafanchan, Jama’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following her family’s refusal to hand her over in marriage.
According to a family member who spoke on Saturday, the incident began earlier on Friday while Endurance, her mother and other relatives were working on their family farm around 10am. During the farming activity, some men believed to be Fulani herdsmen allegedly approached Endurance’s mother and demanded that the teenage girl be given to them in marriage, praising her beauty and repeatedly calling her by name.
The family reportedly did not take the demand seriously at first, believing the men were joking. However, the situation later turned violent.
After completing their farm work, the family members were returning home at about 6:30pm and were waiting for a commercial motorcycle when the attackers allegedly followed them through the bush and laid an ambush near the farm.
The family source explained that as the group of four was walking, the attackers suddenly rushed them. The older women fell during the attack, and the assailants reportedly used a torchlight to identify their target. Upon realizing they had grabbed the wrong person initially, they searched again, found Endurance, and forcefully dragged her into the forest.
There, the attackers allegedly inflicted severe injuries on the teenager, including cutting her hand with a machete or sharp object, leaving her critically wounded.
Endurance was first rushed to the General Hospital in Kafanchan before being referred to a private medical facility for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of her injuries, she has now been referred to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for advanced medical care.
The family disclosed that five suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack, out of an estimated nine individuals allegedly involved. According to the family, the suspects are known to them and live close to the farm area.
The family is now appealing to the Kaduna State Government, security agencies and the general public for urgent intervention, medical assistance and justice.
They have called on authorities to ensure that the arrested suspects are not released, that those responsible are prosecuted, and that the victim receives compensation and proper medical support.
Residents of Goska community say the incident has further heightened fear in the area, where insecurity, violent attacks and alleged cases of forced marriage have continued to threaten lives and safety.
The family also revealed that earlier this year, a relative from Tudun Wada was attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen, and his decomposed body was later found mutilated, underscoring the growing security concerns in the community.
