Members of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) have reportedly executed eight men accused of spying for the Nigerian government in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria, sparking widespread outrage and heated reactions on social media.
According to Naija News, the incident was disclosed on Tuesday by security expert Brant Philip via a post on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter). The victims were alleged to be collaborators with Nigerian security forces and included members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) as well as one police officer.
Brant Philip stated that the victims were captured at different times from various communities across Borno State. Some were reportedly arrested from their homes, while the police officer was said to have been apprehended along the Gubio–Damasak road. Despite being detained at different locations and times, the eight men were allegedly executed on the same day.
In his post, Brant Philip wrote:
“ISWAP announced a new series of executions of spies and CJTF militiamen loyal to the Nigerian army, all were captured from their houses by the group, along with one police officer captured between Gubio and Damasak. A total of eight men were executed all in the same day yesterday, while they were captured at different times previously from different villages, all in Borno State, northeast Nigeria.”
Following the report, reactions poured in on social media, as shown in the accompanying screenshot circulating online. Many Nigerians expressed anger, frustration, and deep concern over the continued killings and the country’s security situation. Some commenters questioned the difference between insurgent violence and government actions, while others alleged betrayal from within communities and criticised the handling of captured insurgents.
The Civilian Joint Task Force has long worked alongside the Nigerian military, providing local intelligence and support in the fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP. This role has made CJTF members frequent targets of insurgent attacks.
