Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent confrontation with a naval officer, Lieutenant A.M. Yerima, during a land enforcement operation in Abuja.
The incident, which was captured on video and widely circulated online, drew intense public debate, with many claiming the minister verbally abused the officer. Critics alleged Wike had referred to the officer as a “f**l,” sparking accusations of disrespect toward the Nigerian military.
However, Wike has now clarified his comments, stressing that his words were misinterpreted and taken out of context.
According to him, at no point did he insult the Nigerian military as an institution. Rather, he reprimanded the officer for allegedly carrying out what he described as an “illegal order” during the land enforcement process.
Wike stated:
“Some said I told the boy, ‘you’re a fl.’ What I meant is this: you cannot be carrying out an illegal order. I didn’t say the military is a fl; I would never say that.”
He emphasized that he holds the Nigerian Armed Forces in high regard, acknowledging their immense sacrifices in safeguarding the country.
“I know the role they play and what they pass through fighting for the country. Go and see what I provided for them to do their work. If I know all that, why will I say he’s a f**l?” he added.
The minister further explained that his anger was directed specifically at the actions of the officer involved, insisting that Lt. Yerima failed to uphold the professional standards expected from a military officer.
“But you — what you’re doing is not what you’re taught as an officer. You didn’t carry out the duty expected of you.”
Wike’s clarification comes amid growing calls from some quarters for disciplinary actions and a proper investigation into the clash. The incident has also reignited discussions about authority, protocol, and the conduct of security operatives during civil enforcement operations within the FCT.
As the debate continues, the minister maintains that his position is rooted in ensuring law and order in the capital, not in undermining the military.
