A mother of two has cried out for help after she was allegedly locked out of her apartment by mistake, an incident that has now escalated into a threat of eviction from her caretaker.
According to her, the incident happened on Monday night when she stepped out briefly to get some medication because she was feeling unwell. However, by the time she returned home, she discovered that her door had been locked with a padlock that did not belong to her.
“I knocked on my neighbor’s door to find out who locked me and my children out, but she wasn’t around,” the woman said. “I wasn’t owing rent, so I had no reason to believe anyone would lock me out. I had no choice but to break the padlock so I could get back inside.”
After gaining access to her room, she immediately called her husband and explained what happened. He, in turn, contacted the caretaker of the building to report the issue.
The caretaker reportedly admitted that she had instructed someone to lock a different door but said the person mistakenly locked the wrong one. She apologized for the mix-up.
However, things took a turn when the caretaker allegedly returned moments later, demanding that the woman replace the padlock before 11 a.m. the next morning or risk eviction.
“She told me to buy a new padlock for ₦3,500 or she would refund my rent and ask me to leave the house,” the woman recounted tearfully. “I pleaded with her to give me a few days, but she refused. My husband also called to beg on my behalf, but she said if I didn’t replace the key before 11 a.m., she would lock me out again.”
The woman, who says she currently has no money, is appealing to kind-hearted Nigerians for advice and assistance. “I live here with my two kids. I don’t have a dime right now, and my husband said he will send me the money next week. Please, I’m confused and scared,” she added.
Many social media users who have seen her story are already expressing sympathy and calling for calm from both sides. Others are urging the caretaker to exercise patience, saying it would be unfair to evict a tenant and her children over a misunderstanding that wasn’t her fault.
