The young man, who reportedly made stealing his source of livelihood, had earlier been caught about a month ago after he tried to rob one of the tenants in a residential building in the area.
It was around 3am that morning when residents were awakened by strange noises from one of the rooms on the third floor. Many initially ignored the sound, thinking it was nothing serious, until the noise became louder and disturbing. According to eyewitnesses, the suspect had reportedly walked all the way from Obiagu to the building where the incident occurred. He quietly climbed up to the third floor and entered the room of one of the tenants, unaware that the man and his friends, who had been smoking earlier that night, were still awake.
The thief managed to steal three mobile phones and a power bank. But just as he was about to escape, one of the occupants suddenly opened his eyes and caught him in the act.
The startled thief ran out immediately, and a hot chase began. The tenant, who is known for always keeping his door unlocked, chased the suspect down the stairs, shouting for help. Within seconds, other residents, including both men and women, rushed out to join in the pursuit.
The noise drew the attention of the entire compound. Some of the men armed themselves with sticks and rods, while others blocked the exit to prevent the thief from escaping.
It was a chaotic scene as the residents caught the suspect and began to beat him mercilessly. The thief fought back at first but was overpowered. The stolen items — the phones and power bank — were recovered from him.
It took the intervention of the local vigilante security group to rescue the suspect from the angry residents that night.
Many residents said they felt no sympathy for him at the time, though some expressed sadness that such a young and good-looking boy had ended up in such a life.
According to reports from the compound’s group chat last week, the same young man was later caught again while attempting another robbery in a different area. Unfortunately, he was not as lucky this time. He was reportedly beaten to death by a mob before security operatives could arrive at the scene.
The news of his death has left residents speechless, especially those who had seen him during the first incident.
One resident described the event as “a painful and avoidable end for someone so young,” adding that it was sad to imagine how his parents must be feeling now.
The community remains tense as residents continue to discuss the tragic fate of the young man whose life ended in such a sorrowful way.
