According to the woman, she was shopping in the market when she suddenly heard a young voice behind her say, “Aunt, please, do not ignore me. I am asking for help.” At first, she said she was hesitant and tried to walk past, thinking it was one of the usual market beggars.
But Kenneth’s next words made her stop in her tracks. He said, “I do not want money from you. I just want you to buy me exercise books for school.”
Surprised by such a request, she decided to listen to the boy’s story. Kenneth, who looked neat but tired, explained that he lives with his grandmother and his younger brother. According to him, his grandmother’s legs are badly swollen, and she can no longer walk or work as she used to.
He told her that he attends a small community primary school but has no one to help him buy his school materials. He already has a school uniform and a pair of shoes, but he said he could not continue his studies without exercise books to write in.
The woman said she was touched by his honesty and courage. She decided to take him to a nearby shop in the market to buy him 10 exercise books.
She said, “Immediately I paid for the books, his face lit up with joy. He was so happy and kept thanking me repeatedly. He said the books would last him the whole school year, right until his final exams.”
Kenneth then went on to explain more about his life. He said his grandmother used to sell vegetables in the market to take care of him and his younger brother. But when her legs started swelling and she became unable to walk, things became very difficult at home.
The young boy said he sometimes walks to town to ask for help or do small jobs so he can buy food for himself and his brother. Despite his struggles, he still finds time to attend school, hoping that one day, life will be better.
The woman said she was so moved by the boy’s story that she ended up spending the little money she had brought to the market to buy foodstuffs for her family. But she said she felt fulfilled and happy because she knew her small act of kindness had made a difference in the boy’s life.
She said, “His sincerity and the way he spoke about his situation touched my heart deeply. He did not ask for money or food. All he wanted were exercise books so he could continue his education. I am truly glad I helped him.”
Kenneth’s story has since drawn emotional reactions from people who heard it. Many have praised the woman for her kindness and also applauded the young boy for his courage, humility, and love for education despite his challenges.
The woman later shared her experience with a short note reminding people not to be quick to ignore those who ask for help.
She said, “Do not ignore everyone who asks for help; some genuinely need it. Remember, the hand that gives shall never lack.”
The brief encounter between the woman and Kenneth has now become a touching reminder that sometimes, a little act of kindness can mean the world to someone in need.
