The discovery was made in the early morning by a farmer. He was walking to check his fields when his eyes fell on the terrible sight. At first, he could not believe what he saw. He rushed to the nearest homestead to call for help. Villagers quickly gathered, some crying, others whispering in shock. The police were called immediately. When the officers arrived, they gently brought down the woman’s body from the tree and covered the small boy with a blanket. Both were taken to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital. Doctors there confirmed that the mother and child had already passed away.
Not long after, the police arrested a man. He is said to be the woman’s partner and the father of the child. The man, who is thirty years old, works as a tour guide in Maun, a town famous for wildlife safaris in the Okavango Delta. Investigations show that on the night before the tragedy, there had been a serious fight between him and the woman. Neighbours heard the noise. They heard shouting and crying from the house. But like in many cases, no one went inside. They thought it was just another family quarrel. The next morning, when the man left the house, he said nothing about his partner or his son.
The police later found him at his workplace near the Delta. At first, he looked calm. But when the officers asked about his family, he became restless. His hands shook. They took him to the Maun Police Station for questioning. For hours, he said very little. Finally, he started to talk. The police have not revealed exactly what he said, but they believe he knows more than he is admitting. He is now facing charges of murder and also of trying to hide the truth. His first court appearance is expected next week.
The town of Maun has seen its share of painful stories. Although it is visited by many tourists and brings jobs through the safari business, families in the area also suffer from pressure. When tourism slows down, money becomes scarce, and relationships often grow tense. Local leaders have said many times that they worry about families falling apart under stress.
Speaking to the press, Superintendent Joseph Lepodise, the Police Chief of Maun, said his officers were working day and night to uncover the truth. His voice was heavy as he admitted that such cases tear through the heart of the whole community. He urged families to seek help when troubles become too heavy to carry alone.
The dead woman’s family is devastated. Her mother came to the police station crying, asking how her daughter could end this way. She said her daughter once seemed happy with her partner, but recently things had begun to feel different. The little boy, full of laughter and life, was the family’s joy. Now, the family must plan a funeral for both mother and son. The funeral may be held on Wednesday, and friends have started raising money to support them.
The tragedy has also spread beyond Maun. Many people online have shared their pain. Some ask why no one stepped in when the shouting was heard. Others point out how difficult life can be for young parents, especially in small towns where support is limited. Words of prayer and sympathy have flooded social media.
For now, the arrest of the boyfriend gives a little hope that justice will be served. But nothing can erase the sorrow of losing a young mother and her child in such a painful way. Maun is mourning, and Botswana is mourning with it.
