Kumasi, Atonsu – A heartbreaking story has come to light in Kumasi that has left many people deeply sad and angry. A 14-year-old orphan girl, still a child with dreams and hopes for the future, has been forced into marriage. The painful part of this story is that it was not strangers who betrayed her, but her very own grandmother and some family members. According to people who know her, the girl never agreed to this marriage. She did not want it. She never showed interest in being a wife to anybody. She wanted to live like other children. She wanted to learn, to grow, and to build her own life. But her family chose money over her future. They collected money from an older man and gave her to him as a wife.
Before this marriage happened, the girl had spoken to someone close to her. She was very scared. She wanted to run away and escape. Arrangements had been made for her to be taken in by a guardian. This guardian usually helps young girls by sending them to learn skills such as hairdressing and fashion design. At first, the child was ready to take this chance. She wanted to leave. She wanted to be free from the forced marriage. But suddenly she changed her mind. The guardian respected her decision and did not force her. Later, the painful news came out that the marriage had already been done.
The way the family treated her on the wedding day was even more shameful. Instead of dressing her with dignity like a bride, they forced her to wear her late mother’s old clothes. The clothes did not fit her, so they stuffed rags into her chest to make it appear as if it did. That is how they sent this little child to the older man. Many who have heard this have said it is one of the most degrading things they have ever heard.
This child, at only 14 years old, should be in school. She should be learning to read, write, and count. She should be learning a trade like sewing or cooking, or playing happily with other children. She should not be sent into a man’s house to serve as a wife. By doing this, her family has taken away her childhood, her dreams, and her future.
The story has caused outrage among many people. Child rights activists are calling this act a terrible crime against the girl. They say child marriage is a violation of human rights. A girl of 14 years is not physically ready, she is not mentally ready, and she is not emotionally ready for marriage. Forcing her into marriage is abuse. It is exploitation.
The person who revealed this sad story has called for urgent help. They are asking every child protection agency, every social welfare office, and every human rights body in Ghana to step in immediately. They are also asking the police and government authorities to act quickly before more damage is done to the child.
In their words:
“This child has been forced into marriage without her consent. She was humiliated and dressed in rags. She is crying for help even though she cannot speak out. We need the government, the police, and human rights groups to rescue her before it becomes too late. No child should be treated this way.”
This case has also opened a wider conversation about child marriage in Ghana. Although the law does not allow it, many children, especially girls, are still being forced into marriage in some communities. Poverty, greed, and lack of education are often the reasons given. But activists say no reason is good enough to destroy a child’s life.
The sad story of this orphan girl is now spreading, and many people are hoping that those in power will hear it and take action. People are asking: how can a grandmother, who should protect her granddaughter, be the one to sell her into marriage?
As it stands, the little girl’s future hangs in the balance. Whether she will be rescued or left to suffer now depends on the response of child protection bodies, the police, and the government. But one thing is clear: the story has touched the hearts of many, and the cry for justice is growing louder each day.
