The young woman, who travelled to the UK in 2022 to study for her Bachelor’s degree, broke down in tears as she narrated how her three-year dream ended suddenly because she mistakenly exceeded the 20-hour work limit allowed for international students.
According to her, everything changed after she lost her father in 2023. She said the tragedy pushed her into depression, and not being able to attend his burial made it worse. She could only watch the funeral through a video call, which left her feeling guilty and broken.
She explained that her biggest motivation was to graduate with a first class degree so that she could make her late father proud. To cope with the pain and loneliness, she spent more time with people at her workplace, which became her safe space. In the process, she accidentally worked beyond the number of hours permitted by her student visa.
When the UK Home Office investigated her employer, she admitted to the mistake and thought the issue was resolved. But months later, she was contacted again and, after answering honestly, was told she had violated the visa rules.
Her university, which had sponsored her, also withdrew its support. She begged to at least finish her final weeks online from Nigeria, but her request was reportedly turned down.
Now, after years of hard work and just weeks away from earning a first class degree, her dream has ended in tears.
