Nigeria has been thrown into a storm of anger and confusion after Omoyele Sowore, a well-known activist and political campaigner, accused Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor of Rivers State, of owning a very expensive hotel in Port Harcourt. Sowore claimed that this hotel is worth billions of naira and that even the cheapest room costs two hundred and fifty thousand naira for just one night. This news came to light when Sowore wrote about it on his Facebook page. In his post, he said people in Port Harcourt were already talking about the hotel and pointing fingers at Wike as the owner. He described the hotel as luxurious, with world-class facilities that only the very rich could afford. Very quickly, his post spread across social media, drawing thousands of comments and shares.
Many Nigerians reacted with anger and sadness. They asked why such wealth is being tied to one man while ordinary people in Rivers State and across Nigeria are struggling to survive. Parents find it hard to pay school fees, hospitals lack medicine, and many roads remain broken, yet rumours of leaders owning billion-naira hotels are spreading. For many, the thought that money meant for development might have been used to build such luxury is painful.
Omoyele Sowore is no stranger to controversy. Born in Ondo State, he became popular for his fearless fight against corruption and bad governance. Through his movement, #RevolutionNow, he has constantly called for better lives for Nigerians. His activism has often landed him in police custody, but he never stops speaking out. In this case, Sowore admitted he did not present hard evidence, but he insisted that the rumours about Wike’s ownership of the hotel are strong enough to deserve public attention and investigation.
Nyesom Wike, on the other hand, is one of Nigeria’s most powerful politicians. He served as governor of Rivers State from 2015 to 2023. During his tenure, he built many projects, including roads, flyovers, and schools. Supporters often praise him for transforming Port Harcourt, but critics accuse him of ruling with a heavy hand, sometimes clashing with political opponents and being linked to violent elections. Now, as Minister of the FCT, Wike is overseeing big projects in Abuja. But this fresh allegation from Sowore has again brought questions about his wealth.
The accusations have already started a war of words. Lere Olayinka, one of Wike’s allies, quickly responded, calling Sowore a liar and accusing him of spreading false stories to seek attention. According to Olayinka, Sowore cannot be trusted and enjoys stirring trouble. So far, Wike himself has not made any direct comment about the hotel. In the past, when faced with similar claims about foreign properties, Wike denied them and described such allegations as the work of jealous enemies.
The matter has now become a topic of debate across Nigeria. In Port Harcourt, where the hotel is said to be located, ordinary citizens are asking how leaders can enjoy such luxury while they battle daily hardships. For them, a room that costs two hundred and fifty thousand naira per night is unimaginable. That money could pay school fees for a whole year, buy food for several families, or even fix community roads.
On social media, Nigerians are sharply divided. Some believe Sowore is simply exposing hidden truths and must be supported. They describe him as a man willing to risk his life to speak for the masses. Others believe he is stirring unnecessary trouble without providing clear proof. They argue that if Wike worked hard and earned his wealth legally, then there should be no problem.
At the moment, there is no official evidence linking Wike to the hotel, but Sowore’s words have already shaken the public. Many Nigerians are now calling on anti-corruption agencies and investigative journalists to look deeper into the matter. They want to know the truth because, for them, it is not only about one hotel. It is about fairness, honesty, and how leaders use the resources of the country.
As things stand, this story has opened old wounds about inequality in Nigeria. While some live in extreme luxury, many others go to bed hungry. The question on the lips of millions remains: who truly owns this billion-naira hotel in Port Harcourt? Nigerians are waiting for answers, because until then, the air will remain filled with suspicion and mistrust.
