The Governor explained that the highest school fee he pays for any of his children is ₦35,000 per term. He shared this during a Nigeria Governors’ Forum meeting, leaving fellow Governors shocked and reflective.
Governor Nwifuru went further to compare his approach with that of some Commissioners in his own administration who pay over ₦2 million per term for their children’s education. He questioned why anyone would spend more than ₦5 million every term when there are schools in Nigeria that can provide quality education if properly supported.
“Where will I get the money to continue paying for their school fees after my temporary tenure as a Governor?” he asked sincerely. He added that he does not want to develop high blood pressure in his old age simply because of a lifestyle that is not sustainable.
The Governor stressed that what the country needs is a united effort to reposition its educational system. According to him, the constant practice of sending children abroad is a sign that Nigeria has failed to fix its schools. He promised that his administration will start from Ebonyi State to make meaningful changes in the education sector so that parents, no matter their status, will have confidence in Nigerian schools.
This statement has sparked conversations nationwide, with many Nigerians praising Governor Nwifuru for leading by example. Some citizens have also called on other Governors and top political leaders to emulate him by enrolling their children in local schools.
For now, his message remains clear: true leadership is not just about building roads and bridges, but about living a life that ordinary people can relate to.
