According to eyewitnesses, at about midnight, a group of fourteen armed men stormed the compound with dangerous weapons. The robbers forced their way into the homes of residents, moving from one floor to another, causing fear, panic, and confusion in the building.
Somtochukwu, popularly known as Sommie, was in her apartment on the third floor when she learnt of the robbery attack. Realising that the heavily armed men were making their way upstairs towards her floor, she quickly began to think of how to escape.

The only direct route out of the building was through the staircase, but she feared running into the robbers face to face. Out of panic and desperation, she decided to use the only other option available to her at that moment—her balcony. In an attempt to save her life, Somtochukwu jumped from the third floor of the building.
Unfortunately, the fall was severe. The impact of jumping from such a height left her with serious injuries that rendered her unconscious. During the chaos of the robbery, other residents were focused on hiding and protecting themselves and their families, and did not immediately notice that she was lying helpless on the ground below.
It was only after the robbers had left the compound and security operatives arrived at the scene that she was rushed to the hospital. Sadly, by the time she got there, doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
Somtochukwu Maduagwu was not just an ordinary resident. She was a lawyer, a beauty queen, and also worked as a news anchor. Friends and colleagues describe her as brilliant, kind-hearted, and full of life. In addition to her professional and public achievements, she was also preparing to walk down the aisle in December to celebrate her 30th birthday as a bride.
Her sudden death has left many devastated, with tributes pouring in from different quarters. Residents of the area have also called on the Abuja government and security agencies to take stronger measures in protecting lives and properties, so that such tragedies can be prevented in the future.
