A political commentator, Dennis Sami, has stirred national attention by urging former President Goodluck Jonathan to take a bold step and contest the 2027 presidential election — just as former U.S. President Donald Trump is doing in his own country.
In his words, Nigeria cannot afford to keep recycling the same political godfathers while capable leaders are watching from the sidelines. Speaking with clear passion and urgency, Sami said it is time for Jonathan to return, but this time, not quietly — he should fight.
According to Sami, “Power in Nigeria is not given. It is taken. Jonathan must rise again. He must fight for it, like Trump is doing. Nigeria needs him now more than ever.”
He reminded Nigerians how Jonathan rose to power without the usual political noise or godfatherism. From Deputy Governor to Governor, then Vice President and President — all without stepping on many toes. Many believed his rise was divinely arranged. But that same quiet journey, Sami noted, was part of what led to his downfall, because he did not build a structure to protect his seat.
Now, with the 2027 general elections on the horizon, Sami says Jonathan must step up differently.
“The political space has changed,” Sami said. “It is no longer about grace alone. It now requires grit. Those who want to lead must be ready to wrestle power from those who do not want to let go.”
Quoting the late playwright Ola Rotimi, Sami added, *“Since power is not given but taken, good men must stop running from politics because they call it a dirty game. If they continue like that, we will keep having dirty leaders.”
He drew a clear comparison with Trump, saying both Trump and Jonathan lost their seats in controversial circumstances — not necessarily because they failed, but because political interests and manipulation worked against them.
“Trump did not give up. Despite impeachment threats, media attacks, and losing re-election, he came back stronger. Today, Trump is running again. Jonathan should do the same,” Sami stated.
He also pointed out that Jonathan, unlike many other past leaders, still enjoys wide respect across the country and even internationally. He said the former president’s calm nature, diplomatic experience, and understanding of Nigeria’s complex system are all strong assets the country desperately needs.
Sami added that with Nigeria struggling under heavy inflation, insecurity, and a weak economy, it is not enough to just complain. He said Jonathan’s return could bring the healing and stability Nigeria needs, especially now that many voices across different regions are calling for his comeback.
“Jonathan may not be perfect, but Nigerians can still remember the peace and stability during his time. There was no hunger like this. There was no fear like this. He left power honourably. But now, we need him to return honourably, but not quietly,” he said.
He stressed that 2027 should not be business as usual. He said credible leaders like Jonathan must not stay away from the ring. “If they continue staying silent, Nigeria will continue to suffer.”
While no official statement has been made by Jonathan himself, Sami believes that with increasing pressure from citizens and stakeholders, the former president will be left with no choice but to make a strong comeback.
