The accident happened at Amorji Junction, involving a big Mercedes truck that was carrying traders, mainly market women, and loads of crayfish. They were returning from Ibaka, Akwa Ibom State, which is a popular market near the Cameroon border.
The truck was fully loaded with both people and goods. According to reports, the traders had travelled a long distance and were heading back home to Umuahia. Just when they were almost reaching their final destination, the truck lost control and somersaulted, throwing people and goods across the roadside.
Eyewitnesses said the accident happened so fast that many could not be rescued on time. Some of the victims died on the spot, while others were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. At least two dead bodies were seen at the scene.
The truck was said to be climbing a slope when the driver lost control. It rolled and landed upside down in a bush close to the road. The cause of the accident is still unknown, but some say it may be due to brake failure or fatigue, since they had travelled overnight.
Many are still in shock over the accident. Family members are heartbroken. Some of the victims had planned to sell their goods and return home safely, not knowing they would never make it back alive.
This tragic incident has left the entire community in mourning. It is a painful reminder that life is fragile, and we must always pray before embarking on any journey, no matter how short or long.
