The Nigerian government has strongly condemned Israel’s recent airstrikes on Iranian territory, describing the attack as a dangerous provocation that could ignite a broader crisis in the Middle East.
This warning came in an official statement released on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. The Federal Government urged both nations to immediately halt further hostilities and embrace maximum restraint. It warned that continued retaliation could escalate into a full-blown regional war with devastating consequences for global peace and economic growth.
“The government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria condemns Israel’s preemptive strike on Iran that has led to an escalation of hostilities between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the State of Israel,” the statement read.
“Nigeria expresses its grave concern and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urges both parties to exercise utmost restraint in the interest of regional and global peace,” it added.
The statement emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to peace, multilateral diplomacy, and the non-aggression principle. It also called on the United Nations Security Council and the wider international community to step up peace efforts and foster direct dialogue between the warring parties.
> “Military action is not a substitute for negotiation,” the government stressed, urging diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law as the only path to sustainable peace.
> “Nigeria stands ready to support all genuine efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and promoting peace in the region.”
The condemnation follows a major Israeli air campaign on Friday that targeted over 100 strategic locations across Iran, including nuclear and military sites. The strikes reportedly killed top Iranian military officials, including the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, General Mohammad Bagheri, and the Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami.
Reacting to the deadly offensive, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared the attack a “declaration of war” and vowed that Israel would face a “bitter and painful” response. Iran’s military command also issued a stern warning, saying there would be “no limits” to their retaliation.
With tensions nearing a tipping point, Nigeria joins a growing number of nations calling for de-escalation and peace talks before the situation spirals beyond control.
