Starting Out in the Struggle
Comfort worked as a secretary in a construction company, where she earned ₦50,000 per month. “My salary was just enough to cover transportation and a bit of food,” she explained. “Transport alone took half of my income, and my rent was ₦200,000. I could barely save anything.”
Frustrated, she asked her boss for a ₦20,000 raise. “She told me I was lucky to be earning ₦50,000 because the lady before me was earning ₦40,000,” Comfort recalled. “Apparently, my advantage was that I had a National Education Certificate. After that, I decided to leave.”
Taking the Leap into POS Business
After resigning, Comfort spoke to a friend who suggested the POS business. Her friend introduced her to an agent who sold her a POS machine for ₦23,000. In February 2024, Comfort set up her POS kiosk—but it wasn’t smooth sailing at first.
“In my first week, I was scammed,” she said. “Some boys tricked me with a fake transaction of ₦50,000. I also got a duplicate transaction error and lost ₦100,000 overall. I felt like maybe the business wasn’t my calling.” But her friend encouraged her, and she decided to keep going.

Overcoming Challenges
Comfort quickly learned the tricks scammers used. “They come with fancy cars and fake ATM cards or try to hold the POS machine while pretending to do a transaction,” she explained. “Some even show fake bank transfer receipts.”
She learned to say no when customers acted suspicious. “Now, when a customer is being difficult, I just ask them to go to another stall to withdraw. I don’t have time for stress,” she said confidently.
Financial Breakthrough
Today, Comfort earns an average of ₦4,000 to ₦5,000 daily, sometimes more on busy days like Fridays. “Some days I make even more,” she said. “On average, I make ₦150,000 a month.”
Comfort has a clear budget: ₦3,500 for electricity, ₦35,000 for her mother and sisters, and ₦25,000 for food. She also saves ₦10,000 a week, apart from her monthly income. “I’ve moved out of the one-bedroom apartment I used to share with friends,” she said proudly. “Now I rent my own place for ₦250,000 a year.”
Plans for the Future
Comfort is determined to grow her business. “I want to open two or three more stalls and have people manage them,” she explained. “I know it’ll be challenging to find honest people, but I’m ready to try.”
She’s not focused on higher education right now. “Growing up, everyone in my family did business,” she said. “My mum and older sister sell farm produce, and my dad was a farmer before he passed. I feel like I’m on the right track.”
Comfort’s story shows how young Nigerians can take control of their future, even without a university degree. “If there’s anyone who’s done something different from what my family does, it’s me,” she said. “I’m just glad I took the risk.”
For young people feeling stuck, Comfort’s journey proves that with determination and the right support, it’s possible to turn things around—and maybe even triple your salary.
