A 1-year-old girl named Nadia tragically lost her life on Tuesday in Anambra State after being given a local herbal remedy for a stomach ache.
According to her mother, who is an orphan and a single parent, she had prepared food for her daughter and a 12-year-old cousin before leaving for work at 8 am.
She returned home around 5 pm only to be met by a crowd at her compound. Three elderly women approached her with the devastating news that her daughter had fainted earlier in the day.
Neighbours said the child had complained of stomach pain. A married woman with three children reportedly picked leaves around the house, squeezed them in water, and gave them to the baby as a herbal treatment. Within ten minutes, the child became unconscious and passed away.
“I’m speechless,” the grieving mother told reporters. “I’m just an orphan and a single mom trying to survive. Now I’ve lost the only thing that gave me hope and happiness.” She described feeling uneasy at work that day and mentioned a disturbing incident where a bird flew into their office window and died—an omen some coworkers joked about.
The community is now in shock as family members mourn the sudden loss. The grieving mother said, “My eyes are swollen, and I do not have the energy nor tears to cry anymore. Go well, my little daughter Nadia.”
Locals are calling for more awareness and caution around the use of traditional herbal treatments, urging parents to seek professional medical care when their children fall ill.
