Professor Nkech Ikedigwu, Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, announced the ban at the Anambra Schools' Cultural Day celebration in Awka.
He said that principals and teachers are now allowed to take phones from any student who comes to school with one.
He explained that this measure is meant to help students focus on their studies without the distraction of phones.
The ban aims to reduce distractions, improve academic performance, and build discipline among students. It is also seen as a way to help students learn more about Igbo culture.
Professor Ikedigwu pointed out that Igbo culture is not only about clothing and dancing; it also represents important values such as honesty, truthfulness, hard work, and respect for elders.
Many believe that this decision by Governor Soludo’s administration will lead to better academic results and help preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people.
Supporters of the ban hope that by limiting phone use in schools, students will be more focused and better prepared for their future.
