The victim, Emilly Sena, was nine months pregnant. Her body was found on Thursday, buried in the backyard of a house in Cuiabá, Brazil.
She had gone to the house after Nataly Pereira, 25, promised to give her baby clothes. But once she arrived, Pereira attacked her, strangled her, and then used a sharp object to cut her open and take the baby.
An expert told the Brazilian news outlet G1 that Sena was alive when the baby was taken. She had a "T"-shaped cut on her stomach, and her body was later buried in a shallow grave with wires around her neck.
Pereira’s husband, Christian de Arruda, 28, thought his wife was actually pregnant and had no idea about the murder. He even posted a photo of the baby online, calling her “my daughter.”
Later, Pereira and de Arruda went to Santa Helena Hospital to register the baby as theirs. But hospital staff became suspicious when they saw Pereira had no signs of giving birth. Tests confirmed she was lying.
Pereira, a mother of three, told police she had suffered two miscarriages and wanted to continue pretending to be pregnant.
Text messages revealed that Pereira told Sena not to bring the baby’s father when she invited her to the house.
Authorities initially arrested Pereira’s husband, her brother-in-law, and another man. But they were released after Pereira admitted she acted alone.
Police are still investigating to find out exactly what happened inside the house. Knives were found at the scene.
