A new report by the Lagos State Ministry of Planning and Budget reveals that most jobseekers in Lagos hold only a Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE), while only 27.72% have a bachelor’s degree.
According to the Lagos Economic Development Update (LEDU) 2025, 41.8% of jobseekers in Lagos have SSCE as their highest qualification, making them the largest group of job seekers.
Those with a bachelor’s degree make up just 27.72%, while 16.9% hold mid-level qualifications such as an Ordinary National Diploma (OND), Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), or Higher National Diploma (HND).
The report highlights a major challenge in the job market, where over half of jobseekers may struggle to secure skilled positions that require advanced qualifications.
Although 87.9% of jobseekers have at least an SSCE, many do not have the specialized skills or higher education needed for better-paying jobs.
To improve employment prospects, the report suggests expanding access to higher education, vocational training, and skill development programs to help jobseekers gain the qualifications needed for stable and well-paying jobs in Lagos.
