A Nigerian woman, Nneka Obani, popularly known as Lolo Obani, has shared her thoughts on how to manage domestic workers effectively. According to her, the key to ensuring that house helps stay longer lies in keeping the relationship strictly professional and avoiding undue familiarity or kindness.
In a Facebook post, Obani explained:
*"Someone once told me that the only way for you to live comfortably with house help, the only way to make them last long in your house, is by treating them exactly as who they are—house help!
Keep it completely professional. Do not treat them like your friends or sisters. Do not laugh or joke around with them. Pay their salaries as and when due and face your front. Do not give them any preferential treatment or show any form of unnecessary kindness to them, else they will run you street.
A house help is never your friend nor your sibling. Know this and know peace."*
Her post has sparked widespread debate on social media, with some agreeing with her stance and others advocating for a more humane and compassionate approach to treating domestic workers.
What’s your take on this? Should domestic workers be treated strictly professionally, or is kindness key to a healthy working relationship?
