Justin Sun, a well-known crypto investor, has shocked the world by eating a banana artwork he bought for $6.2 million. The artwork, called "Comedian," was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan.
It features a simple banana taped to a wall and became famous in 2019 at an art fair in Miami.
Justin Sun bought the artwork at an auction in New York on November 20. The banana used in the artwork was originally bought for 35 cents from a fruit vendor. At a special event in Hong Kong, Sun ate a different banana as a replacement.
The Idea Is What Matters
Sun said the value of the artwork is not in the banana itself but in the idea it represents. People at the event were also given bananas and duct tape to recreate the artwork at home.
He later said on X (formerly Twitter):
"The taste was different because of the history behind it. It reminded me of a banana from 100 years ago."

Sun compared the artwork to digital items like NFTs, saying it represents freedom and decentralization. “This artwork can be created and displayed anywhere, just like digital assets,” he explained.
The purchase came with instructions for displaying the artwork and a certificate to prove it’s real. In the past, other versions of "Comedian" were eaten by performers in 2019 and 2023.
In addition to this, Sun recently announced that his cryptocurrency company, Tron, is investing $30 million in a new project by President-elect Donald Trump called World Liberty Financial.
