Simon Ekpa, a leader of the banned group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been arrested in Finland for allegedly inciting terrorism and promoting separatist propaganda.
The District Court of Päijät-Häme in Finland detained Ekpa on November 21, accusing him of using social media to encourage violence. The court stated that his alleged offense happened on August 23, 2021, in Lahti. He is suspected of publicly inciting crimes with terrorist intent.
Nigerians have reacted strongly to Ekpa’s arrest. Many people are calling for him to be deported back to Nigeria to face justice for his actions. Some believe his activities have caused harm in the southeastern region of the country.
A user, @slimtongue, commented: "Dep0rt h!m back... He's got some dance moves for us."
Another user, @mighty_sports, said: "It’s unfortunate for this guy. Why would anyone be harming his own people that he claims to be fighting for? I hope the Finnish government will not extradite him to Nigeria because nobody will stand up for him."
@AskFatai remarked: "The arrest of Simon Ekpa by Finnish authorities is long overdue. The Nigerian government deserves credit for this. He has been responsible for the sit-at-home orders in the South East, which have affected the region negatively. Nigeria is not a zoo country as he calls it. We all need to do our part to make it better."
@odogwu_ogidi wrote: "Now that Simon Ekpa has been arrested, he should be extradited to Nigeria immediately. You can’t incite violence in Alaigbo while enjoying the benefits of Finland."
Many Nigerians are hopeful that justice will be served. However, some are waiting to see if Finland will agree to extradite Ekpa to Nigeria for trial.
