In a significant breakthrough, the Nigeria Police Force, led by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has successfully dismantled a notorious gunrunning syndicate operating between the Bauchi and Plateau regions.
This is part of a broader crackdown on violent crimes across the country. Over the past month, the Force has recorded the arrest of 2,740 suspects involved in major criminal activities.
Key Arrests and Criminal Cases
During this period, the Nigeria Police Force arrested:
- 295 suspects for armed robbery
- 186 for kidnapping
- 271 for murder/homicide
- 71 for unlawful possession of firearms
- 199 suspects for sexual offences
- 143 for cultism
- 1,575 for various other crimes
In addition to these arrests, 185 firearms and 4,087 rounds of ammunition of various calibres were recovered. The police also retrieved 111 stolen vehicles and successfully rescued 129 kidnapped victims.
The Gunrunning Syndicate
One of the most notable achievements in this recent operation was the arrest of a gunrunning syndicate. The suspects, including Taimako Mato, who was a weapon handling instructor at a Boko Haram camp, were apprehended with a PKT machine gun, 40 rounds of 37.2mm ammunition, and 95 rounds of 62mm cartridge ammunition. Other members of the syndicate, identified as John Danladi, Mohammed Munkail, Manasseh William, and Muhammadu Haddi, were involved in supplying these prohibited weapons to criminals.

IGP Egbetokun has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians.
He emphasized the deployment of diverse strategies and tactics to combat various forms of crime across the country.
The IGP also urged citizens to support the police in their efforts to ensure peace and security.
The Nigeria Police Force remains determined in its pursuit of reducing crime to its lowest level, ensuring that perpetrators of heinous acts are brought to justice.
