Today, Peter Obi, along with several high-ranking members of the Labour Party and the Obidient Movement, paid a condolence and solidarity visit to Borno State following the devastating floods that have claimed lives and destroyed properties across the region.
The delegation included notable figures such as the Labour Party Caretaker Chairman, Distinguished Senator Nenadi Usman, Vice Presidential Candidate Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, and other key members of the party.
Key Visits and Interactions
During their visit, the team met with the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, and the Shehu of Borno, His Highness Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al Amin El-Kanemi, to offer their condolences and solidarity with the people of Borno.
They expressed their deep sorrow over the loss of lives and properties caused by the recent floods.
The team also visited the Bank of the North spare parts market, where traders suffered significant losses due to the disaster, and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Government College, where they interacted with thousands of displaced residents. In one particularly emotional moment, they visited a woman who had tragically lost her newborn twins to the flood.
Labour Party’s Commitment to Support
Peter Obi emphasized the Labour Party's commitment to supporting those affected by the disaster. To this end, the party has made an initial donation of ₦50 million to the Borno State government to aid in recovery efforts.
However, Obi made it clear that the party’s support does not end there. The Labour Party will continue to stand with the people of Borno in the days and months ahead, offering more aid and resources to help rebuild and recover from the disaster that submerged over half of Maiduguri and displaced thousands of residents.
