Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has listed the reasons behind the purchase of a new presidential jet, an Airbus A330.
This aircraft was bought to replace the 19-year-old Boeing B737-700(BBJ) that was acquired during President Olusegun Obasanjo's administration.
Onanuga explained that the decision to acquire the new plane was driven by the need to save Nigeria millions of dollars in maintenance and fuel costs, which were becoming increasingly unsustainable with the aging Boeing jet.
The Airbus A330 was reportedly purchased at a price well below its market value, making it a cost-effective decision for the country.
The move to replace the old aircraft was recommended following an investigative hearing by Nigeria's parliament.
The hearing raised concerns about the safety and cost efficiency of the Boeing B737-700, especially after it malfunctioned during a trip to Saudi Arabia.
In response, the Nigerian Senate’s security and intelligence committee advised that the old plane be replaced to minimize downtime and reduce operational expenses.
Additionally, Onanuga highlighted that the new Airbus is not only more spacious but is also equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, a customized interior, and an advanced communications system, enhancing both safety and comfort for presidential use.
