The Nigeria Police Force has strongly condemned the unprovoked attack on its personnel by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shi'ite group, in Abuja on August 25, 2024.
This violent incident occurred at a police checkpoint near Wuse Junction, where officers were viciously assaulted with machetes, improvised explosive devices, and knives.
As a result of the attack, two police officers were killed on the spot, while three others were left unconscious and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. The attackers also set three police patrol vehicles on fire during the incident.
In response, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed an intensive manhunt for all those responsible, including the sponsors of this heinous act. Already, 97 suspects have been arrested, and several weapons used in the attack have been recovered.
The IGP has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice, stressing the Nigeria Police Force's (NPF) commitment to upholding law and order and preventing such acts of anarchy.
He expressed deep condolences to the families of the slain officers and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The NPF calls on the public for continued support and cooperation in its efforts to maintain peace and security across the country.
