A group of bandits, reportedly led by a notorious commander named Damina, has caused tragedy in Mutunji community, part of Dansadau emirate in Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State. The bandits, known for their terrorizing activities, have killed one person and abducted more than 100 others.
Damina is said to have instilled fear in the community by imposing a hefty levy of over N110 million on farmers, demanding payment before they could access their farms. An anonymous local resident shared with BBC Hausa Service that the bandits attacked during the night, encircling the community on many bikes and taking away people on Friday night.
The source revealed that the recent attack was a result of farmers' inability to pay the N110 million levy imposed by Damina. The bandits, operating between 9:40 pm and around 11 pm, inflicted harm, killed one person, and abducted over 100 villagers, leaving the community in distress.
Previously, the bandits had demanded sums like N8 million, N10 million, and even N20 million at different times. Despite some payments made, they insisted on the total sum of N110 million. The distressed local resident pleaded for help, stating that the situation is beyond their control.
When contacted, the Zamfara State Police Command spokesman mentioned that Mutunji falls under Dansadau and is covered by the military. He advised reaching out to the military spokesman for further information. Phone calls to the Deputy Director Public Relations, North West Operations of Hadarin Daji, Captain lorahim Yahaya, went unanswered at the time of inquiry.
