The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kwara State Sector Command, has sadly confirmed that eight people lost their lives in a road accident at Oke-Onigbin along the Omuaran-Ilorin Road in Irepodun Local Government Area.
The sector commander, Stephen Dawulung, conveyed this information through a statement by the sector Public Relations Officer, Busari Basambo, in Ilorin, the state capital.
The fatal incident occurred on a Friday evening around 7:40 pm and involved a Mack trailer and a Mitsubishi bus, according to Basambo. FRSC's rescue team from the Omuaran Unit Command swiftly responded to the scene, where preliminary investigations revealed that the Mitsubishi space wagon, en route to Ilorin, collided with an oncoming Mack trailer during an overtaking attempt.
Tragically, eight individuals, including one male adult, three female adults, and four children, lost their lives instantly, while six others sustained various injuries. The bodies were respectfully deposited at a local mortuary in Omuaran.
Further investigations pointed to speed, wrongful overtaking, and poor visibility as the primary causes of the crash. Dawulung, emphasizing road safety, urged drivers to avoid night journeys, maintain a reasonable speed, and take a 30-minute break after every four hours of driving. This, he explained, is crucial to prevent accidents resulting from poor visibility, driver fatigue, insufficient sleep, and a lack of proper vehicle control.
Expressing sympathy for the affected families and wishing a quick recovery to the injured, Dawulung assured that all obstructions related to the crash had been cleared, and normal traffic flow had been reinstated. He announced that investigation officers had initiated a comprehensive inquiry into the incident to identify remedial measures.
Dawulung reiterated FRSC's commitment to enhancing road traffic safety through robust enforcement against infractions, public awareness campaigns, and the prompt rescue of accident victims.
