Ralph Yale, a 16-year-old black teenager, was hit twice in the head for ringing the wrong bell.
Sources say he was shot Thursday night by a white homeowner on 115th Street in what his family called a "hate crime."
His family said they parked their car in their driveway at 10pm on Thursday and believed it was at 115 Terrace, where he had picked up his twin brother.
A teenage chemical engineering student at Texas A&M University rang the doorbell, believing it to be a friend's, and was immediately yelled at.
Aunt Faith Spoonmore wrote: "A man opened the door, looked my nephew in the eye and hit him on the head. My nephew fell to the ground and the man threw him again.
The teenage boy fell to the ground but was still conscious and managed to escape and run to a neighbor for help.
However, help did not come immediately and he had to knock on the door of three different houses before someone finally came.
Ralph was immediately taken to the hospital and is currently recovering from his injuries.
This teenager is known among his peers for his intelligence and "musical genius".
Ralph is a member of the Olympia High School Sorority and Science Team, has played in marching, jazz, and competitive bands, and is one of the top bass clarinet players in Missouri.
After being recognized as a 2022 graduate of the University of Missouri Academy, he had big college dreams.
His family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical bills and say he has a long way to go both mentally and emotionally.
The unidentified g#nman suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and issued a statement, but was later "released pending further investigation."
Police have recovered the gun used in the incident, but are waiting for the teenager to give a statement about what happened, which is the reason for the delay in prosecuting the homeowner.
