Tragedy struck on Saturday, as a bus carrying the Kano State sports delegation crashed off Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area, claiming the lives of over 20 athletes and officials.
The accident happened about 50 kilometres from Kano city. The team was returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.
According to reports, the bus, which belonged to the Kano State Sports Commission, was transporting athletes, officials, journalists, and medical staff when it suddenly lost control and plunged off the bridge.
One of the deceased has been identified as Abdulsamad Rabi’u, a medical officer attached to the team.
A survivor who spoke to reporters said the bus was carrying about 30 people when it crashed. He said that 22 passengers died instantly, while others were rushed to the Kura General Hospital for emergency treatment.
Confirming the tragic incident, the Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Bala Fagge, described the accident as a major loss. He said the accident occurred just as the team was about to arrive in Kano city after several days on the road.
Initial investigations suggest that the bus lost control and veered off the bridge, leading to a high number of casualties and serious injuries among the survivors.
The state government has promised to provide support to the victims' families and is expected to issue an official statement soon.
