The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, submerging homes and washing away properties worth millions of naira. NSEMA spokesperson, Hussaini Ibrahim, confirmed the casualties on Saturday in a message to our reporter.
He said:
“Number of deaths, 151; number of injured, 11; and 3,018 displaced so far. Number of affected households: 503, 265 houses affected, with 3 communities affected.”
Ibrahim also reported that two roads and two bridges were completely washed away by the flood.
Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba visited the affected areas on Friday, promising immediate relief for the victims. He assured residents that the government would cover all medical expenses for the injured and missing persons.
“We have records of those who lost their lives, and there are those who are still missing. Those who are unwell should be taken to the hospital, and the government will pay for their expenses,” he said.
Garba also urged the Mokwa council chairman and NSEMA to document victims properly to facilitate government support. He further stated that the federal government has also provided relief materials to the victims, especially those who cannot fend for themselves.
The Angwa Hausawa and Tifin Mada communities have experienced floods in the past, but residents say this is the worst disaster in recent memory. Many homes have been destroyed, leaving thousands displaced and without shelter.
