Tech billionaire Elon Musk has taken a bold step to transform X (formerly known as Twitter) into an all-in-one app by introducing a new messaging feature called XChat.
Unveiled over the weekend, XChat promises to rival popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal. It comes with features like end-to-end encryption, vanishing messages, file sharing, and audio/video calls.
In a post on Sunday, Musk described XChat as “all new,” highlighting its focus on privacy and security. “All new XChat is rolling out with encryption, vanishing messages, and the ability to send any kind of file,” he wrote. “This is built on Rust with (Bitcoin style) encryption, a whole new architecture. You can do audio/video calls without a phone number across all platforms.”
Reports suggest that XChat is currently in beta testing among paid X subscribers. Screenshots shared by app researcher Nima Owji reveal group chats, vanish mode, and a four-digit passcode to lock messages — a significant upgrade from X’s earlier direct messaging features.
With this launch, Musk aims to position X as an all-in-one communication and social platform, fulfilling his vision of an “everything app.”
