A Nigerian woman has shared a deeply emotional story that has sparked debate online, after her former partner suddenly demanded access to their five-year-old son years after choosing to remain absent from the child’s life.
According to her account, she had a son for a man she dated in the past. During the pregnancy, the man did not deny responsibility and supported her financially, paying hospital bills until she gave birth. However, the relationship did not progress into marriage, and they never lived together.
She explained that her family was unaware of the pregnancy because she lived alone and only returned home after childbirth. After apologising, her family accepted her back. She then asked the child’s father to formally meet her family—not necessarily for marriage, but to introduce himself and acknowledge responsibility for the child.
“My father said he should at least show his face,” she said. “I wanted him to have a relationship with my family so they would know he fathered my son.”
However, the man reportedly refused to meet her family and preferred to stay in the background. Though he occasionally sent money, he never visited the child, never bonded with him, and never built a father–son relationship. As a result, the boy grew up without knowing his biological father.
Years later, the woman met another man who accepted her child as his own. The man later proposed, and they got married. The couple now live together as a family, with her husband playing the role of a father to the boy.
The situation reportedly took a dramatic turn after the woman recently gave birth to another child. A few days after the delivery, her ex-partner allegedly contacted her for the first time in a long while, having heard about her marriage and new baby.
She said the man suddenly expressed a desire to establish a relationship with the five-year-old boy. He reportedly asked for permission to call the child regularly and visit their home so the boy could get to know him. He also allegedly made threatening remarks, saying he would involve a lawyer if access was denied.
The woman said his sudden interest raised suspicion. “He wants to know the surname the boy answers. Everything about this sudden concern smells like trouble,” she said.
She disclosed that she had planned to tell her son about his true biological father when he turns 18. However, the unexpected demand has now created tension in her home.
After informing her husband, she said he firmly rejected the idea of her ex being involved in their family life. “My husband said he doesn’t want to see him anywhere near his family,” she stated, adding that she supports her husband’s stance.
Despite this, the woman admitted she is deeply worried. She fears that if the biological father goes to court, he may be granted custody or visitation rights.
“I do not want my son to be taken away. I don’t want any court case. I just don’t want my son to go to him,” she said. “He was never there physically, only sending money once in a while. Now that another man is raising the boy as his own, he suddenly wants to be a father. Isn’t this selfishness and wickedness?”
The story has triggered mixed reactions online, with many sympathising with the woman and praising her husband for stepping up, while others argue that biological fathers still have legal rights regardless of past absence.
The situation highlights the emotional and legal complexities surrounding parental responsibility, child custody, and the long-term impact of absent parenting on families.
