A popular Nigerian cleric, Senior Pastor Dr. Chris Okafor, has reportedly taken legal steps against controversial social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, over alleged cyber harassment, cyber bullying, criminal defamation, cyber stalking, and malicious impersonation.
In a press briefing made public, representatives of the cleric stated that they had taken notice of what they described as repeated online attacks and harmful publications targeted at their client. According to the statement, the alleged actions include cyber incitement, online harassment, stalking, and the circulation of libelous content across social media platforms.
The legal team explained that the online attacks against Pastor Chris Okafor did not start recently. They traced the origin of the allegations to one Miss Doris Ogala and others, whom they accused of spreading false and damaging stories about the cleric. However, the lawyers stressed that the current legal action is focused on Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, and a lady identified as Miss Chi, who are accused of further amplifying and sustaining the alleged defamatory content online.
The statement described the allegations and stories shared about the pastor as false, malicious, and deliberately designed to harm his reputation, ministry, and personal life. The legal representatives also dismissed the claims circulating online as baseless and motivated by personal interest, adding that such narratives were calculated to mislead the public and exploit the name of their client.
According to the cleric’s camp, the continuous online publications have caused reputational damage and emotional distress, prompting the decision to seek legal redress. They warned that freedom of speech does not give anyone the right to spread false information or engage in cyber crimes under the guise of activism or social commentary.
As of the time of filing this report, Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, has not officially responded to the claims or the reported legal action. The case is expected to further raise debates around social media responsibility, cyber harassment, and the limits of online commentary in Nigeria.
More details are expected to emerge as the legal process unfolds.
