A young Nigerian woman has cried out in distress after discovering, just one month into her marriage, that her husband has epilepsy — a condition she said he deliberately hid throughout their four-year relationship.
The woman, who shared her ordeal online, said she is overwhelmed with pain, anger, and betrayal after witnessing her husband suffer a seizure for the first time shortly after their wedding.
According to her, they dated for almost four years, during which he never showed a single sign of the condition. She said he never had an attack, never took his medication around her, and never mentioned anything health-related that could raise suspicion.
She explained that when she lost her mother and dropped out of school, life became extremely difficult and she turned to selling tomatoes for survival. During that time, her partner encouraged her to pursue nursing and even sponsored her education until she became a qualified nurse. Because she was in school in another town, they spent limited time together, and she often visited only on weekends. She believes this made it easier for him to hide his medical condition.
Her shock came unexpectedly when her husband collapsed during a conversation at home and began convulsing with foam coming out of his mouth. Panicking, she ran outside to call neighbours for help. After the seizure stopped, she said her husband became angry with her for alerting the neighbours, accusing her of embarrassing him.
The woman said she was even more devastated to learn that the man’s entire family knew about the condition but never told her before the wedding. She now feels deceived and says she cannot continue in the marriage, adding that she fears having children who might inherit the condition.
She said the Catholic Church has insisted that she cannot divorce because the marriage has already been completed, but she dismissed the church’s stance, saying she cannot remain in a union built on secrecy and lies.
Heartbroken and confused, she expressed her frustration in her message to her husband, writing: “I didn’t sign up for this, Julius. I didn’t.”
Her story has triggered strong reactions online, with many people debating medical honesty, marital transparency, and the emotional impact of discovering hidden health conditions after marriage.
