Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has announced the date for a planned protest demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Sowore made the announcement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, @YeleSowore, on Thursday.
According to him, the protest march — tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow — will take place on October 20, 2025, at 7 a.m., starting from the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
“We now have a date for the historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. It is October 20 at 7AM!” Sowore wrote.
He described the upcoming march as a “historic movement” aimed at putting pressure on the Federal Government to release Kanu unconditionally.
Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, after his controversial extradition from Kenya. He faces several charges, including terrorism and treasonable felony.
Over the years, there have been multiple court orders directing his release, but the IPOB leader has remained in detention, a situation that has drawn criticism from human rights organisations and triggered occasional protests across the South-East region.
The planned protest date, October 20, also marks the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS memorial, a coincidence that has generated further attention and anticipation among supporters of Kanu and civil rights advocates.
Sowore, who has been at the forefront of several national protests, called on Nigerians to come out peacefully and join the march, describing it as a collective demand for justice, freedom, and respect for the rule of law.
