In a surprising discovery, scientists have found that some female frogs use a strange but clever survival trick — they pretend to be dead to avoid being harmed by aggressive males during mating season.
Researchers studying a species known for its explosive breeding — where hundreds of frogs gather to mate in just a few days — noticed that many males fight over the fewer number of females. This fierce competition sometimes turns dangerous, as several males may cling to one female at once, leaving her struggling to breathe and even at risk of drowning.
In the middle of this chaos, scientists saw something unexpected. A female frog suddenly went completely still, stretched out her legs, and appeared lifeless. Experts explained that this is called “tonic immobility”, a natural state of temporary paralysis that some animals use when they feel trapped or threatened.
Although it is not a deliberate act of pretending, this reaction can save the female’s life. Once the males lose interest, she can recover and escape. Researchers say this discovery shows how powerful and strange nature can be — even when the fight is simply for survival.
