According to her, she and her husband sold almost everything they owned so he could travel abroad in search of a better life. Before he left, he asked her to move in with his elder sister for the time being. She agreed, believing it would only be temporary and that it was for the good of their future.
However, seven months into the marriage and six months into her pregnancy, her situation has become unbearable.
“My husband sends money to his sister for my needs,” she explained tearfully. “She controls everything about my life and marriage. I have no say. Even my husband doesn’t send money to me directly. Everything passes through her.”
“Sometimes my husband sends thirty thousand naira for my upkeep for the month. But she spends less than seven thousand on me. The rest disappears, and I cannot ask questions,” she said.
She also revealed that during antenatal visits, she only receives N3,500 through the sister-in-law, which barely covers her transport and medical needs.

The most painful part for her is that her husband fully trusts his sister and often gets angry with her based on what the woman tells him.
“There are times my husband won’t even pick my calls for a week. I later find out it’s because of something his sister told him about me. I am naturally quiet, so I just endure in silence,” she said.
According to her, things got worse after the sister-in-law travelled for one month. During that period, her husband sent money directly to her for food — ten thousand naira weekly to feed herself and two nieces living with them.
“I managed it well. We never slept hungry. But when his sister came back, she told him that the children had lost weight and accused me of saving the money for myself. Since then, he stopped giving me money directly,” she lamented.
Now pregnant and emotionally exhausted, she says she feels trapped and unhappy.
“I can’t even satisfy my pregnancy cravings. Sometimes, when I crave fruits, she tells me I don’t need them. She says when she was pregnant, she didn’t eat fruits and still gave birth successfully,” she added painfully.
The woman says her own family still sends her money occasionally because she cannot afford her basic needs — something she finds deeply embarrassing as a married woman.
She explained that going to stay with her mother isn’t an option because she lives far away, and her husband has strictly forbidden her from leaving his sister’s house.
“He says he trusts me more when I’m with her. But he doesn’t see what I go through daily. I feel like a stranger in my own marriage,” she said.
Before getting married, she was an educated, independent woman who ran her own small online business. But since moving in with her sister-in-law, her life has changed completely.
“I feel like I have lost myself,” she said. “This situation has made me regret everything. I wish I wasn’t pregnant because it would have been easier to walk away. Now, I don’t even know what to do.” 😢
Her emotional story has drawn sympathy online, with many urging her husband to take responsibility and stop putting his sister in control of his wife’s life and wellbeing.
