Marriage is often seen as a dream come true, a time when love, happiness and partnership should grow stronger each day. According to her, she never imagined marriage would feel like this. She described how her husband, who comes from a wealthy home and provides everything she needs, has refused to change his habits of leaving the house messy. She said their bedroom is often dirty, filled with plates, crumbs and clothes scattered everywhere. She explained that he prefers eating in the bedroom instead of the dining area, and sometimes leaves dirty plates for days until she picks them up. The young wife narrated how her husband drops his work clothes on the floor and leaves his socks and trousers lying around, even when the laundry basket is close by. She said she is tired of being the only one cleaning and feels like a maid instead of a wife.
In her words, “I am tired. I am not a maid. I am a wife. I love my husband so much but he never listens. Our home is always messy. He comes back from work, removes his clothes and drops them anywhere. I clean, I pick up after him, and yet he never changes. When I complain, he tells me to go back to my parents if I cannot manage a home.”
She also revealed that she once suggested getting a maid to help, offering to pay the salary herself, but her husband refused, saying it was a waste of money since he already has a wife. She said she reported the matter to his mother, hoping for support, but she was told to endure it because that was how he had always been, even as a child.
The young woman admitted that her husband is caring, successful and provides for her financially, but his lack of cleanliness and unwillingness to help around the house has left her deeply unhappy. She said she feels embarrassed to invite friends over because she never knows what kind of mess she will meet in the sitting room, verandah or bedroom.
“I dated him for three years before marriage and kept hoping he would change, but nothing has changed. I am tired of living in a mess and I do not know what to do anymore,” she lamented.
Her story has touched many people online, with some urging her to seek counselling and others reminding her that marriage requires patience, communication and compromise. However, her cry for help reflects a wider reality faced by many women who feel burdened in marriages where housework and cleanliness are seen as “a woman’s duty” alone.
Her pain is also a reminder that love without respect, understanding and partnership can quickly turn into a source of sorrow. For now, she remains torn between love for her husband and frustration at a life where she feels more like a cleaner than a partner.
